Who can participate on the ARC for Central Whitby?
School principals will send letters of invitation to potential committee members the week of May 20, 2008. Ideally, parent representatives will be those who are active members of the school community and who have the willingness and the time to dedicate to this extensive process. In addition, the committee will include a representative from the Town of Whitby and a representative from the Whitby business community.
How can parents participate in the review process?
There are two facets to the process. First a working committee will be established and will hold 14 meetings over the next eight months. All members of the public are welcome to attend one of the four public meetings scheduled or to send comments, ideas or questions to the ARC through via email or vmail. If at the end of this process, a school is determined for closure, what kind of timeline can the community expect?
No school closures have been determined at this time. As part of the Accommodation Review Process, there are schools identified for possible closure, schools identified for program adjustments and the possibility of building a new school. It the role of the Accommodation Review Committee, composed of community stakeholders to review the possibilities, conduct their own research and to make a recommendation to the Board. The ARC is tentatively scheduled to make a recommendation to the Director of Education in March 2009.
What are the criteria used for determining the closure of a school?
Through an evaluation process of current school conditions, it was determined which schools have costly renewal needs. In some cases, schools are determined to be prohibitive to repair. In these cases, alternative facility arrangements are explored.
