Mandatory Community Involvement

A Secondary School Graduation Requirement

Information Manual

As stated in Ontario Secondary Schools, Grade 9 to 12: Program and Diploma Requirements, 1999 (OSS) every student who begins secondary school during or after the 1999-2000 school year must complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement activities as part of the requirements for an Ontario Secondary Diploma (OSSD). The purpose of the community involvement requirement is to encourage students to develop an awareness and understanding of civic responsibility and of the role they can play and the contributions they can make in supporting and strengthening their communities.

These activities must be completed outside scheduled class time; they must not be part of a credit course; they must be unpaid activities; they must total a minimum of forty hours; and they must be completed by the end of grade twelve.

The Durham District School Board views the community involvement requirement as one of the many positive experiences young people will have to apply their education to community life in practical ways.
